SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Barossa Old Rose Repository

Barossa Rose Repository

The Barossa Old Rose Repository is currently the only garden of it’s kind in Australia. A garden of locally grown preloved and often forgotten roses brought together in one place for the public to appreciate some of the roses our forefathers grew.

A place where people can wander freely to see some of these special beauties, and perhaps be inspired to plant some in their own garden.

The roses have been grown from cuttings taken from the “mother plant” which may have been found in a cemetery, along the roadsides, or in the gardens of old homesteads and cottages.

The Barossa Old Rose Repository was established in 2003 and is cared for by members of the Heritage Roses in Australia Barossa and Beyond Regional Group. The aim of this group is to encourage others to appreciate and grow some of the older types of roses- available through specialist rose nurseries- or group members- and to educate the public and educate the public about the importance of preserving these old treasures for future generations.

Where is the Repository?

Bleak House

Bleak House

Bleak House the rose garden first created by Susan Irvine in the 80's will once again be opened to the public. The gates will officially open on Saturday the 8th of Dec 07, and the garden will then be open every Sat / Sund / Mond 10am till 4pm until the 1st week of May 08 . We initially hoped to open in early November but with so many new projects on the go it just wasn't possible. There were 500 plantings to nurture in and almost 100 metres of horse manure to spread throughout the gardens.

Over the past eight years Maarten Reinalda has planted a magnitude of roses all over the Bleak House estate. The new species and Alister Clark beds are looking ever so enchanting . There is also a 100 metre hedge of the beautiful Bleak House Rose.

Feature bank of single roses in pink and yellow shades include: Mutablis, Fruhlingsgold, Complicata, and Squatters Dream. Over 1,000 scented hybrid teas supply cut flowers for florists.

Pathways meander through many levels of the 1.5 acre garden, to access and explore all of its features: Banks of Hydrangea and unusual perennials add other dimensions to form the ever changing theme of colour and texture. The driveway is flanked with vivid greens and yellows of euphorbia, which in contrast, compliment the rich and dynamic purple foliage of Cotinus Grace.

A tulip tree, Liriodendron, and wisteria provide delicate mottled shades to the courtyard, while Clematis Montana soaks up the full sun, trellised alongside the pool.

Geelong Botanic Gardens, Eastern Park 2

Geelong Botanic Gardens, Eastern Park
Following several years of discussion and planning with the Geelong Botanic Gardens, and "official bodies", a very competent planning team led by Louise Player was given the go ahead to replant the Rose Garden with Heritage Roses, as the Heritage Rose Conference was to be held in Geelong during November 1999. Funding was provided via an HRIAI grant, for the purchase of plants and new soil. The Geelong Botanic Gardens staff provided the labour.

Subsequently old roses were removed, beds refurbished and twenty volunteers planted approximately 200 roses over the winter of 1998. The Heritage Rose Group continues to care for the beds, working as a team on the third Monday of the month. The gardens are open to the public everyday.
