Barossa Old Rose Repository

The Barossa Old Rose Repository is currently the only garden of it’s kind in Australia. A garden of locally grown preloved and often forgotten roses brought together in one place for the public to appreciate some of the roses our forefathers grew.
A place where people can wander freely to see some of these special beauties, and perhaps be inspired to plant some in their own garden.
The roses have been grown from cuttings taken from the “mother plant” which may have been found in a cemetery, along the roadsides, or in the gardens of old homesteads and cottages.
The Barossa Old Rose Repository was established in 2003 and is cared for by members of the Heritage Roses in Australia Barossa and Beyond Regional Group. The aim of this group is to encourage others to appreciate and grow some of the older types of roses- available through specialist rose nurseries- or group members- and to educate the public and educate the public about the importance of preserving these old treasures for future generations.

National Rose Collection of Australia- Ruston’s Roses – Renmark, SA

In 2005 Ruston’s Roses of Renmark were granted the title "the National Rose Collection of Australia". This mantle is inclusive of all the bushes in the garden-some of which do not exist in other parts of the world. Begun by David Ruston, there are now more than 40,000 rose bushes of more than 3,000 varieties, making the collection one of the biggest, most diverse and important in the world.
It now includes modern garden roses such as hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures and ground covers; old garden roses including gallicas, damasks, centifolias, mosses, bourbons, teas, noisettes, hybrid perpetuals, musks and rugosas; as well as a number of species roses. The good news for rose lovers from around the world is the fact that his niece Anne and her husband Richard decided to purchase the property which will ensure the survival of this unique collection.
Each year the property supplies more than 40,000 dozen roses (480,000 stems) to florists in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth as well as some 400,000 buds of grafting wood to Australia’s nursery industry.
In 2007, as an initiative of David Ruston and HRIAI, the planting of a national collection of Tea roses was begun. The plan is to grow all the Teas (and Noisettes and Chinas) available in Australia, including foundlings. The Collection's purposes include the identification, preservation, study, display and eventual distribution of these roses, and the education of heritage rose lovers and the general gardening community about this part of our heritage.

A collection of early HTs and pernetianas has also been commenced, to supplement David's remarkable group of pre-1960 HTs. Other classes may eventually be added if future water supplies permit. For further information please check” Tea-Noisette-China collection” in Resources on this website.
Today, the roses spread farther than the eye can see. Only 5 km from the centre of Renmark, Ruston’s Rose Garden is open to the public from October to June inclusive and is pleased to support Renmark Rose Week in October each year.

David Ruston Sculpture Unveiling
We are very excited to announce the David Ruston sculpture project has received a$10,000 Arts SA Grant and that donations have been granted tax deductability by the Federal Government. We have now passed the $90,000 with our fundraising and need only $10,000 more to reach the target to cover the costs of the project. Plans are well in hand for the unveiling of the sculpture on Saturday 16th October which is the beginning of Rose Week in Renmark. It will be a busy month for rose lovers with our conference earlier in October but please be aware that accommodation is already filling fast if you are planning to attend the unveiling.
David wishes to express his thanks for the donations made by Heritage Rose members and says he is looking forward to the “greatest event in his life”. The surrounds of the sculpture will be planted with David’s favourite rose -Lady Hillingdon. Donations can still be made and contributions of $100 or more will be recognised by a paving brick -with name engraved-which will feature around the base of the sculpture.
Donations can be made through any branch of the NAB to the David Ruston Sculpture, BSB 085 878, account No. 829 190 774
or contact PO Box 12, Renmark, SA 5341 or davidrustonsculpture@riverland.net.au for details.

Geelong Botanic Gardens, Eastern Park
Following several years of discussion and planning with the Geelong Botanic Gardens, and "official bodies", a very competent planning team led by Louise Player was given the go ahead to replant the Rose Garden with Heritage Roses, as the Heritage Rose Conference was to be held in Geelong during November 1999. Funding was provided via an HRIAI grant, for the purchase of plants and new soil. The Geelong Botanic Gardens staff provided the labour.
Subsequently old roses were removed, beds refurbished and twenty volunteers planted approximately 200 roses over the winter of 1998. The Heritage Rose Group continues to care for the beds, working as a team on the third Monday of the month. The gardens are open to the public everyday.
