11th International Heritage Roses Conference
(Chaalis, France, 13-15th of June 2007)
By delegate, Judy Barrett of Morning Star Estate
Chaalis 2007 Conference Program
Prior to the commencement of the Conference Di Durston and I had planned to spend time in Lyon. Having arrived in Lyon we traveled to meet friends Odeile and George Masquelier, who have the most beautiful home and garden, located in the old part of Lyon. Arriving at such a beautiful property was well worth the long trip!
Odeile’s garden was truly tranquil - walled garden with perennials; unfortunately a lot of the roses were finished except for the occasional flower. Wonderful pots of Oriental Lilies and clematis abound. Looking over the large city of Lyon with Odeile’s arbour of roses dotting the skyline was truly a memory never to be forgotten.

The 11th International Heritage Roses Conference was held at the spectacular Royal Abbey of Chaalis situated 30 miles North of Paris, between the town of Senlis and the Charles de Gaulle International Airport.
The Conference ran from 13th to 15th of June 2007. This date was chosen in line with the date of the WFRS Regional Convention in Luxemburg (7th-10th of June).
The Royal Abbey of Chaalis is a XVIIIth century abbey, now a public estate which has been transformed into a museum, with a large park, a rose garden, etc. It belongs to the Institute de France, an institution regrouping the five French academies (Académie Française, Academies of Sciences, of Fine Arts, etc.). The region was marvelous and had a lot of facilities for an international conference.
This 11th International Heritage Roses Conference was organised by the association Rosa Gallica, associated member of the World Federation of Rose Societies, with the support of the Institute de France and of the Abbey of Chaalis. A Pre-Conference Tour was organised between the Luxemburg Regional Convention and the Conference itself (10-11-12 June), and a Post-Conference Tour was organised after the Conference (16-17 June).
A private tour to the National Collection of Gallicas at Commer (near Laval) was also possible on the 18th of June.
Most of the lectures were in English; lectures that were scheduled in French were translated into English. Presentations given by Charles Quest-Ritson, from the UK on "Imperial Splendour: English Rose-Breeding (1876-1947)", "Painters and Roses at Lyons in the 19th Century" prepared by Odile Masquelier, and Hilga Brichet (Italy) presentation on "Little Known Old Roses in Europe" were truly fantastic.
